Gutter Cleaning in Romsey — What You Need to Know
Romsey is one of Cambridge’s most densely packed residential areas — a grid of Victorian terraces running between Mill Road, Coleridge Road and Catharine Street, mostly built between 1870 and 1910. The housing stock is almost entirely two-storey brick terrace, many still with their original shared downpipe arrangements where one pipe serves two or three properties along a terrace run.
The dominant tree problem in Romsey is sycamores — particularly the large mature trees in back gardens along Tenison Road, Kingston Street and Perowne Street. Sycamore helicopter seeds are a spring menace that most Romsey homeowners underestimate. They spin in on the wind from March through May and stack up in gutter outlets and downpipes in a way that leaves never do — essentially plugging them from below while debris builds up above.
We clean gutters across all of Romsey CB1 and know the estate well. The shared downpipe arrangements on the terraces are a particular focus — a blockage in a shared pipe affects two or three properties at once, and identifying who needs to do what is something we can advise on. We price all standard Romsey terraces at £65 fixed.

Why Romsey Gutters Need Regular Attention
🌀
Sycamore Helicopter Seeds
The large sycamores behind Tenison Road and Kingston Street drop thousands of seeds from March through May. Unlike leaves, sycamore seeds spin vertically into downpipe outlets and stack there. A single afternoon of seed fall can partially block three or four pipes. Most Romsey homeowners don’t realise until the first July downpour — months after the seeds dropped.

Shared Victorian Downpipes
Most Romsey terraces were built with a single downpipe shared between two adjacent properties. When the shared pipe blocks, both houses overflow simultaneously. Identifying the blockage location and clearing it properly requires knowing which end to work from. We’ve dealt with this across Catharine Street, Perowne Street and Kingston Street — it’s a routine part of our Romsey work.
⚙️
Cast-Iron Gutter Profiles
Many Romsey terraces retain their original cast-iron half-round or ogee gutters. These are excellent performers when maintained but hold debris in the channel without obvious overflow — the ogee profile in particular traps silt that builds up over years. We clean cast iron by hand, check all joints for rust or gaps, and note any concerns in the written report we leave with every job.

What Romsey Customers Say
★★★★★
“Victorian terrace on Catharine Street. They cleared a sycamore seed blockage from the shared downpipe that had been causing overflow since April. Before and after photos made it completely clear what had happened and what was fixed. Straightforward and fairly priced.”
Mark T. — Catharine Street, CB1★★★★★
“Booked them for the whole terrace run on Perowne Street — three properties. Priced each one separately, turned up on the agreed day, worked down the row efficiently. The shared downpipe issue sorted out properly. No mess left.”

When should I clean gutters on my Romsey terrace?
Twice a year for most Romsey properties: May, to clear the sycamore seed drop, and November, after the autumn leaf fall. If you’re on Mill Road near the larger trees, a third check in August can be worthwhile. Don’t skip the May clean — a spring blockage that sits uncleared through a dry summer becomes compacted and much harder to shift by autumn.
My terrace shares a downpipe with next door — who is responsible for cleaning it?
Legally, shared drainage is typically a shared responsibility — but in practice it’s rarely formalised. We clean the pipe itself, regardless of which property’s gutters it serves, as part of the standard job. If there’s a blockage that’s clearly originating from a neighbouring property’s debris, we’ll tell you honestly so you can discuss it with them.
How do sycamore seeds block downpipes differently from leaves?
Leaves wash through most downpipes given enough rainfall — they’re flat and limp. Sycamore seeds have a stiff wing that catches on the inside of the pipe outlet as they spin in. Once one catches, it creates a shelf that the next one catches on too. Within a week you can have 15–20 seeds stacked at the outlet, creating a plug that prevents all water flow. Leaves then pile on top and the pipe is completely blocked.
Can I clear Romsey gutters myself?
You can — but Victorian terraces have gutters at 5–6 metres above ground, requiring a ladder of at least 4.5m. Without a ladder standoff, you’re resting the ladder against the guttering itself, which damages both the gutter and your ladder. For shared downpipes in particular, working from one end without knowing the full run can push blockages further down rather than clearing them. We do this efficiently and safely every day.
How much does gutter cleaning cost for a Romsey terrace?
£65 fixed, including VAT, for a standard two-storey Victorian terrace in Romsey CB1. This includes before and after photos, the full gutter run, shared downpipe check and clearing, and a gutter condition note. No extras, no call-out fee.
Do you cover the whole Mill Road area?
Yes — Mill Road, the Romsey estate streets, Coleridge Road and all surrounding roads within CB1. We also cover the CB1 areas of Petersfield and the streets around the Radegund towards East Road.
